On August 8th, a public lecture titled "Exploring the Past Through Kanazawa University Campus Ruins – The Takara-machi Site and What Its Structures and Artifacts Reveal About the Early Modern Kanazawa Castle Town and the Emergence of Modern Hospitals and Medical Schools" was held at the university’s Central Library and Museum, with 18 participants ranging from high school students to citizens in their 70s.

Assistant Professor Atsushi Matsunaga from the University Museum explained that the Takara-machi area of the Takara-machi/Tsuruma Campus is one of Kanazawa University’s on-campus archaeological sites, known as the Takara-machi Site. In the early modern period, this area was home to communities such as Yoriki-machi, where lower-ranking samurai called yoriki lived, temple grounds, and jishichi—land used by residents who paid a land tax called jishigin. Through the introduction of structures and artifacts unearthed over more than 20 years of excavation, the lecture offered a fresh perspective on life in the Kanazawa Castle Town and the origins of hospitals and medical schools in the region. After the lecture, participants joined a guided tour of the museum’s exhibition room.

Students commented that learning about sites near the university where they would like to study in the future and learning about them in the context of such history deepened their understanding.
